Spring is Bursting with Adventures in McDowell County

Springtime in these Blue Ridge Mountains is more than just something to behold - it is something to be joyfully experienced! The fresh splashes of bright green on new, tender branches, choirs of birdsong, and new wildlife thriving everywhere - covering the land, filling the air, and bubbling in the waters. There's no better place to be this time of year than in beautiful McDowell County. Here are some of our favorite spring adventures to help you make the most of your time reconnecting with nature during your visit.

1. Walking & Rolling on Springtime Hiking & Biking Trails

Trek through blossoming Mountain Laurel to find more signs of new woodland life or set your pace on an ancient trail that winds through the towering trees of Pisgah National Forest. Point Lookout Trail in Old Fort is accessible and a highly-rated trail for hiking, biking, and running. Dogs on leashes are welcome, too. For a more challenging spring adventure, try the Copper Ridge Trail, a favorite among hikers, mountain bikers, and birders. Speaking of birding...

2. Spring Birding in the Blue Ridge

More than 250 species of birds have been observed along the Blue Ridge Parkway. You may be inspired to start your own Big Year when you catch sight of a Peregrine Falcon or an Appalachian yellow-bellied sapsucker, two of the rarer species found in our mountains. We've rounded up 6+ spots that are worth packing your binoculars for, as recommended by the North Carolina Birding Trail.

Do note that some of these areas are still recovering from Hurricane Helene and may not be fully open.

3. Springtime Camping Adventures

Most seasoned campers consider spring the most ideal season for outdoor living. The longer and less buggy days make for stellar hiking. Those evening breezes with perfectly cool sleeping temperatures create extra dreamy snoozing. If you enjoy your spring nights outdoors with a side of s'mores, you'll want to make reservations at Buck Creek RV Park or Spacious Skies Campground, to name only a couple of options. Choose from tent sites by the water or among the trees, full hook-up RV sites with all the amenities, or unique "glamping" cabins. Plan a romantic getaway or a family campout - these spring adventures await in McDowell County.

4. Spring's Fresh Catch

Mountain stream fly fishing or angling in a lake is a great excuse to play in the water, even if you don't catch any fish. But if you are interested in catching fish, you're in luck. The Catawba River is stocked with large- and smallmouth bass, yellow perch, redbreast sunfish, and more. Area streams are rife with trout to provide plenty of practice with your fly casting. Give it a go on your own or hire professionals to guide and gear you.

Find all the rules and regulations in our fishing guide.

5. Spring into Action with VolunTourism

Helping others feels really good. Being outdoors in nature feels really good, too. Fortunately, there are perfect opportunities to do both while visiting McDowell County this spring. VolunTourism is a highly encouraged activity as a positive way to spend time here, as the 2024 storm recovery efforts are still underway. Learn about what's needed - how can you help?
