In a post-Helene North Carolina, the trails look a little different this year. However, we're called "The Great Trails State" for a reason, and that reason is the beautiful natural surroundings we're blessed with.
First Day Hikes are a tradition originating in Massachusetts in 1992. Since 2012, First Day Hikes have been held in all 50 states and marketed as America's State Parks First Day Hikes. With the Pisgah National Forest at our doorstep, and the shadows of the Black Mountains above us, McDowell County is a beautiful region to start your adventures in 2025.
Our partners at McDowell Trails Association invite you to kick off the new year with a refreshing hike at one of our most well-known trails, Point Lookout!
Join the MTA on a 5-mile hike to Point Lookout on Wednesday, January 1, 2025 during their First Day Hike in Old Fort. The Old Fort Trailhead is located at the end of Old Highway 70 about 3 miles west of Old Fort. Google Maps Link: https://maps.app.goo.gl/QwLRy8EpVDm6k6Fa9
Old Fort and surrounding areas are recovering from Hurricane Helene. The Point Lookout Trail is open, but you will see areas that were affected by the storm. Hikers are expected to stay on the paved trail.
We hope you will join us for this First Day Hike!
