Setrock Creek Falls, nestled at the base of Mount Mitchell, is a beautiful multi-level waterfall accessible by an easy trail.
This hike is about 1.1 miles out-and-back from the parking area, and although there are a few roots and rocks to scramble over near the falls, the trail is overall easy — a great hike for families with kids and/or leashed pets.
Setrock Creek Falls cascades more than 50 feet, flowing over four distinct tiers that are visible from the base of the waterfall. In dry seasons, the falls can be little more than a trickle (though still quite picturesque!) — plan a trip soon after a rainfall for more a spectacular sight.
Practice good waterfall safety when visiting Setrock Creek Falls — obey all posted signs and NEVER climb near a waterfall or enter a stream above a waterfall.
Driving Directions to Setrock Creek Falls
The trailhead is located at the Black Mountain Campground near Mount Mitchell.
From Old Fort or Marion, take US Hwy 70 to NC Hwy 80 North. Follow NC Hwy 80 North for about 14 miles. (This road becomes very winding, and you will cross the Blue Ridge Parkway.) Turn left onto South Toe River Road and follow signs to the Black Mountain Campground (about 2.8 miles).
From the Blue Ridge Parkway, exit at milepost 344 onto NC Hwy 80 North and travel for 2.2 miles. Turn left onto South Toe River Road and follow signs to the Black Mountain Campground (about 2.8 miles).
Parking is available directly across from the campground entrance.
Setrock Creek Falls Hiking Trail
From the parking area, cross the bridge into the campground. Take the first left onto Briar Bottom Road (signs for Mount Mitchell Trail — blue and yellow blazes). Then take the second trail on your right, with signs for Setrock Creek Falls (white blazes).
