"Kelly Solesby is a multidisciplinary artist who believes in the power of DIY, authenticity, and creative freedom. Growing up in the Great Smoky Mountains shaped her love for making things by hand and finding beauty in everyday life. Her work is influenced by her Appalachian culture, experiences with travel, and a deep need for self-expression. Through both painting and zine-making, she explores themes of identity, place, and creativity, while also encouraging others to do the same.

Solesby enjoys painting florals for their organic shapes and delicate forms, finding inspiration in the natural flow of petals and leaves. She gravitates toward bright, vibrant colors, using them to bring energy and warmth to her work. In addition to painting, she creates zines, which are small, self-published booklets that serve as a platform for independent storytelling. Her zines explore Appalachian culture, personal narratives, and creative expression.

Solesby’s newest zine, “Chewin the Fat”, is a fun and casual collection of life updates told from the perspective of an Appalachian artist. Created in response to the diminishing enjoyment of sharing on social media, this newsletter-style publication offers a more personal and engaging way to document and share everyday experiences. This project received support from the North Carolina Arts Council, an agency funded by the State of North Carolina, the Burke Arts Council, the Caldwell Arts Council, Arts Culture Catawba, the Rock School Arts Foundation, the Hiddenite Center, Iredell Arts Council, and McDowell Arts Council Association."
